First Steps x3
What began as an RTS-MMO based on the popular M.U.D. game Tradewars—inspired by titles like Warcraft III and Diablo—was the first project for a small studio in Tempe, Arizona at the start of the millennium. None of us really knew how to use Photoshop yet, fresh out of school and figuring things out as we went. I was making a whopping $8 an hour and pretty much sleeping under my desk. Times were good.

When renowned comic book artist Joe Madureira’s own game studio venture folded, he joined us—bringing a few of his team along. Under his direction, we scrapped Tradewars: Dark Millennium and rebranded the project as Exarch Online. With a new vision for both art direction and gameplay, we rebuilt from the ground up and became a tight-knit, talented team. Eventually, Realm Interactive was acquired by NCSoft, and the game was reborn once again—this time as Dungeon Runners, a free-to-play hack-and-slash MMO.
